Nitrate is made at the Laboratory from 5 Shroud Sand, 5 of any sand, 1 Wood Acid and 1 Salt, five per 180-second batch. Most of its 17 uses are Coloring Station colors such as Cathedral and Liquid Light. It also goes into Black Powder and Mauveine at the Laboratory, Fertilised Farm Soil, the Mortar and Shroud Meteor.
