Animal Husbandry
Taming takes species bait crafted by the Farmer. Thrown bait keeps the animal busy long enough to sneak up and pet it, and the cycle repeats until its 1 to 4 taming hearts are full, after which it can be picked up and carried home. A farm animal with its own food in a feeder and a bed produces on a timer and can breed; cats and dogs produce nothing but give Paw's Touch when petted. The Farmer's quest Animal Farming introduces taming, and the Taming Startle Repercussion world setting decides how much progress a scare costs.

Farm animals
9Every species has its own food and feeder except two pairs: both goats eat Goat Food and both birds eat Bird Food. The Dune Armadillo and the Yak sleep on a Big Farm Animal Pillow, and the other seven share the plain Farm Animal Pillow. Most animals produce one item every 20 min and hold up to 4, but the Yak makes Raw Wool every 10 min and holds 8, the Capybara holds 10, and the Hophare produces nothing at all.
Pets
6Cats and dogs wait at fixed places, Captain Whiskers at Scavenger Ruins and Ikko at the Abandoned Watchtower among them. Tyger at the Alchemist Tower and Ruffles at Thornhold come with the quests Cat Search and Dog Search, and both need only 2 taming hearts. Sapphire, found at Sapphire Strand, and Pompom Jr., at Shorewatch, need 4.
Care and breeding
A world can hold 128 animals. Each one eats one food every 10 min, needs a partner within 15 m to breed and looks for a bed within 50 m that counts as sheltered at 20% cover, and a baby grows up in 10 min. Petting a cat or dog gives Paw's Touch, +25 Health for 30 min.
